Domain Name Registrations Pass 183 Million..

Verisign recently published it’s quarterly domain report – “The Domain Name Industry Brief“.

As to be expected from a report dealing with numbers of that size, the latest report is a little on the boring side for the average person, with a lot data and statistics to wade through.

So we’ve picked some of the more interesting figures, which you can see below!

  • At the end of Q1 2009 there were 183 million registered domain names across all TLD‘s
  • The total number of domain names across all TLDs grew by 12% over Q1 2008.
  • ccTLDs (country-code TLDs) account for 74.1 million of those domain names.
  • The number of ccTLD domain names grew by 18% compared to the same time last year.

Also included in the report is this chart showing the number of domain names across all TLD’s quarter by quarter, where you can clearly see the dominance of .com’s over all others, with .org’s up there along with China’s .cn growth gaining momentum.

Another interesting side note is that Verisign also includes information about the load on it’s DNS infrastructure in these reports. Since Verisign is the domain registry that manages the .com and .net TLDs it has it’s work cut out for it. Verisign’s DNS servers handled an average of 38 billion queries per day in Q1 2009, up from 35 billion for the same period last year.
