Possible Apple iPhone 4 Recall

July 15th, 2010

Apple iPhone Recall Poll Vote Now Possible Apple iPhone 4 RecallTech News websites are all in a flutter over Apple announcing an emergency press conference on Friday morning. Speculation is running wild there may be a reluctant product recall of the iPhone4 based on the widespread antenna design-flaw issues reported by a large portion of the already several million strong user base.

Of course we won’t officially know until Friday, however, with Apple’s track record of denying design flaws in it’s products, merely calling a press conference is both bold & unprecedented .

Apple Clarifies it’s stance on Adobe Flash

April 30th, 2010

Apple CEO Steve Jobs posted an open letter today, finally clarifying Apple’s long held position against Adobe’s Flash format. Job’s politely worded letter listed several reasons for their decision not to support Flash on their mobile devices.

Most of the reasons have been suspected for some time, including the performance costs on mobile CPU’s when playing Flash files. The main point of contention for Apple is that  Adobe’s Flash format is a closed system which has some concerns for their end users and developer libraries. Definitely a valid point of contention, but quite ironic for Apple to complain about.

How does this affect you I hear you asking? Well the slow battle on this front is what will eventually shape modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and javascript which are looking for a unified solution for rich media content, not reliant on any one format or monopoly. You can bet Adobe has been feeling the effects for some time.

Windows 7 Hits 100 Million License Mark

April 28th, 2010

$$Taken from Engadget:

It’s hardly been a secret that Windows 7 was on track to become Microsoft’s fastest-selling operating system, but the company has just now finally made that designation official, and also revealed that the OS has crossed the magical 100 million licenses sold mark in the process. In other words, that translates to Windows 7 being installed on one in ten of the world’s PCs just six months after it launched, which is pretty darn impressive any way you slice it.

Given the enthusiastic reception Windows 7 has received since it’s beta testing phase, these figures are not too surprising. Some quick maths with a conservative average price of $200 per copy of Windows 7 would give Microsoft a tidy 20 billion dollar profit over the last 6 months.

Most Expensive Domain Names

April 27th, 2010

The practice of buying up unused names, known as “domain parking”, is estimated to be worth more than $1 billion worldwide — and Australia is seen as a growing market for those with an eye for a dollar.

Domainers, as they call themselves, spot generic or popular names that have not been turned into websites and register them and as many variations as possible. They cram them with advertisements and watch as they earn a few cents per hit — big bucks when you have a large enough domain portfolio.
