Don’t get me wrong – Our business and infrastructure very rarely moves, However we have having a revolution.. Or maybe it’s an evolution.
Ausweb has very quietly (Apart from the occasional blog post) been preparing one of the most amazing platforms for the future growth of our business, and in preparation of the future growth of all of our customer’s (existing and future) businesses. We have designed and built an almost indestructible infrastructure based in Sydney, which is due to open to the public soon.
We have been testing and developing, and testing and developing some more, continuously for the past 6 months in preparation to launch this product and we are almost there. We’ve purchased a stack of equipment, and we are about to purchase the last piece in preparation for the announcement and launch.

One of the biggest news stories floating around today have been stirred by the latest comments from Rupert Murdoch. In a recent interview Murdoch touched on possible moves his News Corporation empire may take towards their proposed online profit model, such as pursuing other news outlets like the BBC for any breaches of copyright and blocking the indexing of News Corp websites by search engines ie. Google. Read more…

Interesting recent article on Pingdom, which makes a point against Adobe’s dominance and suite of products not necessarily being a good thing for innovation in the web and graphic design arena. It’s an interesting read which goes through the history and evolution of web and image design applications over the last 15 years, and how Adobe has slowly acquired or crushed them all to sit atop the heap. At long last, the last Friday in July or as it is less commonly known as – System Administrator Appreciation Day! Also referred to as Sysadmin Day, or SAAD!
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the holiday which started in 2000, and I for one would like to petition for a more upbeat acronym, but hey you can’t win ‘em all.
Here at AUSWEB we’ll be celebrating by continuing business as usual, keeping your hosting services running nice & smoothly! Stopping only occasionally in order to calm our nerves with a soothing cigarette. Outside of course, not near your data!

Not the deep fried potato kind but the small silicon kind, responsible for powering most of our day to day lives, especially in the virtual realm of the internet. Intel has released a new press-kit detailing their chipmaking process, aptly titled “From Sand to Silicon”.
Pretty interesting to see how the process has evolved, and continues to evolve. Smaller and smaller! Have a look over at the intel site

We’ve been enjoying the 40th anniversary of the Apollo mission and the remastered Apollo Moonlanding tapes in the AUSWEB office today. Such are the joys of the Hi-Def revolution, however its quite astounding that one of the most important event’s in human history has only been documented in such mediocre quality for so long!
Even more astounding is the admission by NASA that the original high quality recording tapes are long lost (and they wonder why conspiracy theory crazies run wild), or possibly erased and recorded over during NASA’s budget slashing days. Either way, take it as an important lesson or reminder to backup your precious data because data loss can happen to the best of us -anywhere, anytime and to anything, even a landmark moment for mankind!

A coalition of social activism groups has launched an advertising campaign attacking the federal government’s proposed ISP filtering plans.
GetUp! Australia, with support from groups like Civil Liberties Australia and Save the Children, have rolled out a satirical commercial lampooning the filter plan which it aims to play on commercial flights to Canberra when parliament resumes.
“I think the thing about this internet censorship plan is that it is ridiculous — it just won’t work and that’s why we went for a parody, to show just how ridiculous this idea is,” said GetUp! national director Simon Sheikh
The office of Senator Stephen Conroy, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, released a statement saying GetUp!’s campaign “misrepresents the Government’s position”. The statement continued that the Government was still trialling it’s ISP level filtering — which Telsta and iiNet, two of Australia’s three largest internet service providers, both declined to take part in.
Hat’s off to Get Up! for standing up for everyone’s rights and taking on the absurdity of the censorship plans with some good humour. The only question unanswered is how long Senator Conroy can keep his sinking ship afloat in the face of all common sense.

Well who would have thought? The humble old DVD seems to be getting a new kick of life due to some very clever thinking scientists at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. Could the rumours be true? over 2000 movies on one DVD? Well Samsung seem to think so… Read more…

So you probably think we’re all sitting back at our desks, day dreaming about the weekend or betting on this weekends football matches but that’s definitely NOT the case. (Go the Roosters!) We’ve been busy making purchases in preparation for our new cloud infrastructure! Gigabit switches, Brand new (and amazingly powerful) Dell Servers, brand new cabinets in the new area of Sydney’s Equinix Data centre, and it’s all coming together rather nicely.
We’ve been busy doing research and development so that we can hit the ground running and we may just be the first Australian host to provide cloud services to the public. And we’re VERY excited about it.
Here’s some specifications of the servers we have purchased, for you personalities out there that have geek or technology tendencies.
Dell PowerEdge R710 servers each with:
Dual Intel Xeon X5550 – 2.66Ghz, 8M Cache, 6.40 GT/s QPI, Turbo, HT (These are the new Intel CPUs with performance improvements which absolutely destroy any previous benchmarks)
72GB RAM – Check out the below photos to see how each set of DIMM slots are assigned to each CPU, which from what I’ve heard – doubles the speed.
6 x 300GB SAS (15,000 RPM) Drives in RAID0 configuration. – Due to the way our cloud infrastructure will work, storage will be raided on the cloud layer so we don’t need to worry about mirroring data at the hardware level.
4 x Gigabit Ethernet ports – At this stage we will be using 2 ports per server, but soon enough we will increasing this to 4 or maybe 6 ports per server for better throughput.
Dual PSU Units – These are awesome, allowing us to actually change power supplies whilst the server is running.

One in 20 Australians is the victim of a scam each year.
During National Consumer Fraud Week, from March 2-8, the Australasian
Consumer Fraud Taskforce, a group of 19 Australian and New Zealand
government agencies is raising awareness of fraud in the community.
The aim of the Taskforce is to work together to reduce the incidence and
impact of frauds and scams, and each year it creates a co-ordinated
information campaign for consumers, timed to coincide with global consumer
fraud prevention activities.
Taskforce Chair and Australian Competition and Consumer Competition Deputy
Chair Peter Kell, says while people are generally aware that scams occur,
few think they will be the target.
“Most people know someone who has been scammed or lost money to fraud, but
most people still don’t think it will happen to them, but anyone can be
the target of a scam,” said Mr Kell.
